Hi,
I have recently discovered that my husband's great grandmother, who I thought was born Elizabeth Ann Cardley, was in fact Eardley. I then found the Eardley site and your indexes, which has enabled me to find her marriage in 1887 at Chorlton, Manchester to my husband's gt.grandfather John Henry Lawler. I would like you to know that I am very grateful for all the obvious hard work in compiling the indexes - without them I would still be searching! Are they complete as far as you know?
As you must know more about the Eardley name than me, do you know if it is mistaken for anything else as well as Cardley? When I searched the 1881 UK National Census (which I have on CD's) for Elizabeth Ann Eardley, supposedly born about 1866 in Manchester, I still couldn't find her (I had already searched in vain for Cardley!). On her marriage certificate, instead of her father's name there was written "Hannah Eardley (Illegitimate)", so I presume Elizabeth Ann was Hannah's illegitimate daughter. I couldn't find Hannah on the Census either.
If you are not able to help, perhaps you could put me in touch with someone who can, especially if you know of anybody researching the Eardley family from Manchester.
I don't know if you are interested, but in the 1901 UK Census on the internet there are a large number of Cardley in the index which are in fact Eardley. I thought that I would put an entry on the Eardley message forum in case other searchers are also having trouble tracing their ancestors!
I hope that you will be able to help me.
Thanks.

Sincerely,

Gill Jones
